Campaign to Help Improve Respiratory Prescribing (CHIRP)
Starting in June 2023 for approximately 12 months West Yorkshire ICB and the University of Leeds are working collaboratively to carry out an audit and feedback programme, the Campaign to Help Improve Respiratory Prescribing (CHIRP).
Throughout the year bi-monthly updates on the prescribing of inhalers and medications related to asthma care are being sent to general practices across West Yorkshire. These reports include references to the latest guidance, sample action plans, practice audit frameworks, and answers to questions relating to asthma management.
This programme utilises audit and feedback to support the aims of the West Yorkshire Adult Asthma Management and Prescribing Guideline that was published in March 2023.
West Yorkshire Research & Development and the University of Leeds have collaborated on a series of transformational programmes that have utilised audit and feedback to enable an improved quality of care:
Information for General Practices
From June 2023 you will be sent bi-monthly updates on the prescribing of inhalers and medications related to asthma care within your practice. Data will be extracted in line with data sharing agreements to produce an anonymised data set, based at practice level, not at patient level. At no point will the ICB or the Research and Development Team have access to the personal identifiable data.
The data will be extracted centrally by the local data quality or medicines optimisation teams (depending on your location) and an anonymised data set, based at practice level will then be shared with the West Yorkshire Research. This data set will form the basis of audit and feedback reports that will be sent by email to each practice.
The searches used are designed to look at the prescribing in specific areas such as short acting bronchodilators (SABAs), inhaled corticosteroids and oral prednisolone. Within the reports will be references to the latest guidance, sample action plans, practice audit frameworks along with answers to questions relating to better asthma management.
As part of this quality improvement project, we will be trialling to see if greater improvements can be gained through the addition of posted physical reports to accompany those received electronically. To facilitate this, a random selection of approximately half of participating practices will receive their feedback report via the post as well as via email. Anonymised, aggregated practice-level data will be reviewed by the University of Leeds as per the data sharing agreement, which may publish these results. Your practice will not be identifiable.
With this information we are then asking your practice to review your current prescribing and make changes where this is appropriate. We are hopeful that the audit and feedback reports will help you to deliver a better quality of care.
